Our History

our-history

The history of The Scanlon Group (formerly known as Scanlon & Gearinger) dates back over 40 years. Its founding partners, Tim Scanlon and Buck Gearinger, started their legal careers at the Akron law firm of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs. They developed a shared commitment to representing individuals in personal injury matters and left the Buckingham firm to form Scanlon & Gearinger in 1979.

Thanks to over three decades years of dedicated service from its attorneys, paralegals, and staff, the firm continues to be a pillar of Akron’s legal community. The firm’s lawyers have lead and served countless professional organizations, charities, and community interest groups. In addition, the lawyers of the Scanlon Group frequently speak at local universities and law schools, at continuing education seminars for lawyers, and at the Ohio Judicial College.

The firm has litigated numerous landmark cases and issues. The Scanlon Group was the first law firm to obtain a successful jury verdict against General Motors for the “window shade” design of automobile seatbelts. The firm has shaped and defined Ohio tort and insurance law with numerous cases before the Ohio Supreme Court. The firm’s lawyers account for several of the largest jury verdicts in the history of Summit County.

The personal injury practice has changed in many ways over the years. What has not changed is the way the Scanlon Group represents every client we have the pleasure of serving – zealously, compassionately, and ethically.
